Chapter 17

Dogfight

The plane droned, a constant white noise that normally would have lulled a baby to sleep. However, in the present circumstances, Sarah felt as terrified as a diver facing a shark.

Silver streamers appeared below them—reflections of the moon on the sea. For a minute, a cloud covered the moon and left them in absolute darkness. She felt more fear grip her heart. How could they be doing this? How could they be heading over the English Channel during World War II where they could be shot down at any moment?

“Well,” said Matt. “I guess it’s now or never. We have to talk to Celery.”

“I guess,” she said. “She won’t want to listen to us, though.”

“When has that ever stopped me.”

“That’s the problem— Hey, what is that?” The moon sliced a slit in the clouds, tracing the grey wings of a bird.

“It’s just a bird,” said Matt.

The bird shot through the clouds, then dove directly at them. Streaks of light etched the sky like lasers.

“It’s a German plane,” said Sarah, her heart thundering. “A Messerschmitt.”

Matt, who’d backed halfway out of the turret, hoisted himself in again and slammed the door shut. “Where?” He crushed her against the far side of the dome and grabbed the machine gun controls.

“Are you crazy?”

“Got to stop him.”

A crackle came over the intercom. Joe’s deep-throated rumble filled the turret. “Enemy spotted. Celery, can you take up the rear gunner position? Thomas, take the middle turret.”

Two voices gave a “Roger.” The intercom clicked off.

Sarah sucked in a shuddering breath as feet clomped through the fuselage. “Celery’s coming. She’ll know what to do. Let’s get out of here.”

Matt ignored her as he swung the machine gun towards the Messerschmitt. He depressed the trigger and a deafening cacophony erupted in the turret. Sarah covered her ears as she watched him rotate the gun and follow the trail of the other plane. He swung the turret so far around Sarah could feel open air at her back. She wasn’t going to look. She wasn’t going to...

The turret swivelled back to its original position just as a crash came from the armoured door. Apparently Matt had locked it.

“Who’s in there?” Celery’s high-pitched voice screamed.

“Hold on,” Matt bellowed. “I’ll get him.”

“You’re going to get us all killed!” Sarah yelled.

The Messerschmitt dipped and twirled, then looped around for another run. Matt gripped the machine gun controls so tight that his hands were nearly translucent, the veins showing through the skin. Bullets blasted from the German plane, ripping metal strips from the Halifax’s underbelly, but as the Messerschmitt swung around to lance the wing and rupture the engines, Matt must have caught it in his sights. He pulled the trigger. A hail of bullets slammed into the wing of the other plane and it exploded, sending shards of metal whistling past them.

Sarah flinched as fiery light illuminated the sky. Then she gasped as the carcass of the Messerschmitt, still being consumed by a ball of fire, plummeted towards the ocean below. Beside it a parachute opened up and drifted down towards the water

“I don’t believe it,” she said.
